Ngila Dickson received an Academy Award nomination in 2002 for 'The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers' and won the Academy Award for Costume Design in 2004 for her work on Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings, Return of the King'. She earned dual Academy Award nominations that year, also being honoured for her costume designs for Ed Zwick's 'The Last Samurai '.
In 2002, Ngila also received a nomination for 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings and won the BAFTA Award for her work on 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers'. She won a Costume Designers Guild Award and received her third Bafta nomination for 'The Lord of The Rings, The Two Towers'.
Ngila’s most recent projects include:
'Peter Pan and Wendy’ -Director David Lowery/ Disney. ‘Blood Moon’ - director SJ Clarkson/HBO . ‘Distant’ Directors Josh gordon and Will Speck/Amblin. Ngila's design work is notable for her versatility, encompassing fantasy (LOTR etc) contemporary (Blood Diamond, The International) and period projects (The Emperor, The Illusionist), her work driven not by genre but by story.
A New Zealander, Dickson first worked with Peter Jackson on his feature 'Heavenly Creatures. Dickson also designed the costumes for the internationally successful television series 'Xena, Warrior Princess, For which she received the NZ Film and Television Award for Costume Design.
Before entering the film industry, Ngila worked as a magazine editor, stylist and fashion designer.
Ngila is an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to design and the film industry, and is a New Zealand Arts Laureate.
